Important note on use

NavX4 plans routes on the basis of OpenStreetMap data and community reports. Map data can be incomplete or out of date. The actual signage and the traffic and nature conservation rules that apply on site always take precedence. You use NavX4 at your own risk.

Data and map sources

  • Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), Europe extract from Geofabrik.
  • Base map (web and app online): OpenFreeMap – © OpenMapTiles, data from OpenStreetMap.
  • Offline maps (Android): NavX4’s own packages from OpenStreetMap data in the OpenMapTiles schema (© OpenMapTiles © OpenStreetMap contributors), generated with Planetiler; offline routing with Valhalla tiles from OpenStreetMap data.
  • Satellite imagery: EOxCloudless by EOX IT Services GmbH – Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 2016 & 2017, CC BY 4.0. Label overlay: Overlay bright – Data © OpenStreetMap contributors, Rendering © EOX and MapServer.
  • Relief/terrain view: Mapterhorn – open elevation data, full list of sources at mapterhorn.com/attribution. The same data drives the hillshading that can be switched on in the layers panel.
  • Optional topographic maps (layers panel, web and app): USA – USGS The National Map (public domain); Australia – © Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia), CC BY 4.0; Norway – © Kartverket, CC BY 4.0; Czechia – ZM 50, © ČÚZK, CC BY 4.0; France – Plan IGN, © IGN, Licence Ouverte 2.0.
  • Public GPS traces (layers panel): GPS traces © OpenStreetMap contributors, tiles from the OpenStreetMap Foundation – online only, never in offline packages.
  • Weather layers (precipitation radar, temperature and wind from the ICON model): data basis Deutscher Wetterdienst, CC BY 4.0; the images come unchanged from the DWD geoservice.
  • Elevation in routing (ascent/descent, minimum/maximum, gradient) and the contour lines of the map layer (calculated from it by NavX4): Terrain Tiles (Mapzen/AWS Open Data, “Skadi” format, roughly 30 m grid). Required attribution: ArcticDEM terrain data DEM(s) were created from DigitalGlobe, Inc., imagery and funded under National Science Foundation awards 1043681, 1559691, and 1542736; Australia terrain data © Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia) 2017; Austria terrain data © offene Daten Österreichs – Digitales Geländemodell (DGM) Österreich; Canada terrain data contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada; Europe terrain data produced using Copernicus data and information funded by the European Union - EU-DEM layers; Global ETOPO1 terrain data U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Mexico terrain data source: INEGI, Continental relief, 2016; New Zealand terrain data Copyright 2011 Crown copyright (c) Land Information New Zealand and the New Zealand Government (All rights reserved); Norway terrain data © Kartverket; United Kingdom terrain data © Environment Agency copyright and/or database right 2015. • Online routing: NavX4’s own routing core (“navx4hopper”, written in Rust) on our own infrastructure, since 18 September 2026. Before that, GraphHopper (open source) did the calculation; routes saved before that day still carry its rule stamp. Which engine calculated a route is shown with every route under “Rules” and in the capabilities report under graph.engine. Offline routing in the app: Valhalla (open source).
  • Hazards and emergency alerts: active fires and the affected areas combined from them – NASA FIRMS (VIIRS NOAA-20, 375 m), usage notes; fire danger – Copernicus EMS / GWIS, CC BY 4.0; disaster alerts worldwide – GDACS (European Commission, Joint Research Centre; UN OCHA), CC BY 4.0 under the Commission’s legal notice, GDACS does not replace official warnings from the local authorities; official weather warnings in Europe – MeteoAlarm (EUMETNET) with the national weather services named with each alert, CC BY 4.0, terms; outlines of the warning areas from MeteoAlarm’s geocodes, German areas © GeoBasis-DE / BKG 2021 (Daten modifiziert). The symbols of the warning types are Lucide (ISC licence), not those of the issuers.
  • Place and address search: Photon (open source, komoot) on our own infrastructure, data from OpenStreetMap via GraphHopper’s Photon export; if it fails, komoot’s public Photon service.
